The amazing U2 girls, jealously within the flock

August 29, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

It truly is amazing to think that within a group of female U2s’ at M.A.R.S., Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary, there is jealously running rampant.

Take our very own Lilly for example. She will fly and dive bomb only the females if given the chance to do so. If we ever have a question about eye color, male or female, we let Lilly decide. Yesterday, Lotty, a female umbrella cockatoo, showed the same behavior when faced with visitors interested in adoption who came to our parrot rescue. She immediately pushed another female away to gain access to the humans. Emily, the other female cockatoo, simply looked on in dismay at the situation. Perhaps when Lotty has found a new home, Emily will have a chance to find a forever home too.

Please consider a donation to our cause so we can continue finding homes for all the M.A.R.S. members.

Sunday morning at M.A.R.S.

August 22, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Ah!!!!!!, Sunday morning at M.A.R.S. Jazz music, special vanilla bean coffee, white bathrobe, hot spa, pancakes on the grill. Well those were my intensions. However, we had the storm of storms roll in yesterday afternoon. The outside aviaries were trashed, the birds miserable. So right to work. Fresh water and food, dry boxes to play in, a general all around clean up. The results, happy quiet birds, jazz music and all the rest will follow. Wishing you all a great Sunday from the entire crew here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary.

M.A.R.S. and McKee, now there is a recipe for success. M.A.R.S. was invited to do two sessions of summer camp at McKee with the kids of Treasure Coast Elementery School. An amazing place by itself, http://www.mckeegarden.org/ McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach is wonderful to visit. Now add in some great kids and some amazing parrots and well you get the picture. Lorry and Chris Burgr, and two of their fids were the stars of the show. We also brought along Cuddles, Tiki and Stella for the kids to interact with and enjoy. We hope to be invited back. Amazing day, our new mascot arrived, his name is Jack Sparrow

July 11, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Crazy as it may sound, I really really put it out there that M.A.R.S, needed a new mascot since our resident iguana Gracie passed away. Lo and behold, today in a u-haul truck from South Carolina, Jack Sparrow came to our parrot rescue sanctuary. He was looking out the passenger window when he arrived, so that says something about his size. Yes he is a big boy!!!!!!!!!!!. He is sweet, loves to be pet and held, and immediately wanted food. A sure sign of being comfortable with his new home. Please consider a sponsorship of Jack or one of our many M.A.R.S. AVIAN MEMBERS http://www.marsparrots.org/donations/

Our very own Jakers, back again

July 5, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Jakers, our very own amazing umbrella cockatoo is back at M.A.R.S. once again. This is the third time this way to intelligent cockatoo has managed to get adopted and then returned. He is a healthy boy, with the smarts of an African Grey. What Jake wants he figures out how to get, much to the chagrin of his adoptive parents. Perhaps he would do well in an aviary situation. I suppose that here at our Florida based parrot rescue that will be our next best option for Jake. Stay tuned for future updates by subscribing to our RSS feed at http://www.marsparrots.org If possible please consider a donation to our cause and help birds like Jake have a forever home here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary

Their project titled , “Pocket change for Polly” was the catchy phrase used by the student council to raise funds for the parrots of M.A.R.S. We so appreciate the community support you have given to all our feathered members. To all who participated, have a wonderful Summer vacation.

Remember Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary needs all of your continuing support. We are a public funded charity. Please consider a donation to our cause by visiting http://www.marsparrots.org/donations/

Amazing Cockatoo our very own Clyde

May 13, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Through out the years I have met many amazing cockatoos, however none can compare with a little Citron named Clyde. His life force has a never ending power supply. He has feathered friends that care for him and watch over him. He has the ability to come through circumstances that could easily drain the life force from a much healthier and larger bird. Yes, he truly is an amazing little guy our Clyde

Originally Clyde came to us in such a state, that I did not believe he would survive the week. He was in a severe state of depression, and very weekend physically. Well, he showed us all what a change of environment, lots of love and good food, sunshine and fresh air, and lots of baths can do to change a birds prospective on life.

Clyde has faced a new challenge. Recently he had to have his wing removed. Now understand he was never much of a flyer , nor did he demand to be one. He did however do the most amazing WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! with both wings up at the same time. His way of saying he was very happy with one thing or another.

He is fighting to deal with this loss. He has good days and bad ones. He will always try his best to act normally, but as you can imagine, he knows he is missing that wing. The other day I gave out large tortilla chips, Clyde took it and placed it where his wing used to be and looked at me with a look only Clyde could muster. A bit impish a bit sad, but if you can believe this with humor. He followed the action with a big WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!. Only our Clyde, He is truly one of a kind. Live long Clyde. We all would miss you way to much, and so would all your feathered friends, especially Mr. Stubbs and Big Bird.

Please consider sponsorship of Clyde by visiting our donation page http://www.marsparrots.org/donations/ or consider becoming a member of M.A.R.S. today http://www.marsparrots.org/membership/

From tree to tree, Mango and Hot Rod fly free

May 11, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Mango

Hot Rod

When asked how I spend the days at Florida Parrot Rescue, M.A.R.S., I  reply, “One never knows what will unfold at the parrot sanctuary on any given day”.

Take for instance last Thursday, when two fully flighted harlequin Macaws got to try out their wings. Mango and Hot Rod, available for adoption here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary are siblings who never leave each others side. So no surprise, when one took flight the other followed.

We here at M.A.R.S. have a three day rule. In three days they are hungry and thirsty, so you had better track them and pray that’s the day of recovery.

From tree to tree on day three we were successful. They were none the worse for the wear, and I believe fully enjoyed their time in the air. They were a beautiful sight for all to see, but not necessarily for me, the tracker.
