First, let me say Happy New Year to all our supporters and friends. We will be entering into our fifith year in February and want to thank all who help us to continue the work at our exotic bird sanctuary, M.A.R.S..

   As you can see by the pic on the left, the chair is always waiting for me to sit and the laptop to begin writing about something here at our Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S..(excuse me for a minute birds are yelling ).

    Well back to writing. Five A.M. is usually the best time to try as all are quiet and calm and not demanding anything yet. It is cold out and they are still hunkered down in their boxes with the blankets inside them. Smart creatures the Macaws, Cockatoos, and Amazons are and so appreciative of the warmth till the sun comes up an provides heat for the rest of the day.

     I usually talk about warm and good things we make in the kitchen here at M.A.R.S. and today especially due to the cold spell, we are having bananna walnut pancakes. Cheep to make and delicious for all the birds.(They love them almost as much as the french toast.)

The work at the parrot sanctuary is on going, and daily. There is always a job or a project that needs doing.(Another blog right ?) But to put it in basic terms, writing a blog, which is a good way to ask for donations and help to keep the rescue operating strong and efficiently, is one of the most difficult things to provide time for.

So please bare with this Director as she is now searching for a co- writer and computer wizzard to get some stories flowing, so all of you can be a part what goes on here at  Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. As always I ask that you continue to support our cause wih your donations, and sponsorships of our non or less adoptable birds,(another blog for another time).

Sunday the 11th of December while working here at M.A.R.S., a knock brought me to the front door. A bird was found at the beach crossover in Indialantic and they were wondering if we could take it in. Since I assumed it was a sea bird I explained that we only do exotics, but there is a place that does near by. To my amazement the comment was made that this bird has a red tail. 

Yes you guessed it an African Grey parrot, and a friendly one.

So they brought him here to Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. Now it just so happens that I was boarding my friend Lindas’  Blue and gold Macaw, and she was due to pick her up at any time. Linda works closly with South Animal Care, and is an Aloha Animal Hospital associate. The wheels are as you see already in motion.

Our volunteer Shelly had mentioned, that are two really good sites for lost animals, Brevard Lost Animals, and Space coast lost animals. I pulled up the sites and looked at the posted pictures. Now here is where it gets interesting. The bird in the posting pictures did not look like the bird we had, and was using the opposite foot to eat all the treats.

To finish up this story Linda made the contacts, said we might have the lost bird here and Shelly followed suit with her contacts. The next day the owner who resides in Palm Bay came to M.A.R.S.and was happily reunited with her bird Matu.

If there is knowledge to be learned from this story one might think it’s to clip all birds wings. But, as most visitors to M.A.R.S. know we allow free flight  to certain birds.  What we learned, is there are great websites to use in Brevard Co. for lost pets, with an amazing network of people.

Last, my next blog has to be about this. Is your bird left footed when taking treats, stepping up, or preforming other tasks or right footed? Or possibly ambidextrous?

For the week of December 18th. The days we will be open are, Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd. Hours 11:00 to 4:30. Saturday 24th, limited hours 11:00 to 1:30.

For the week of December 25th. The days we will be open are, Wednesday 28th, Friday 3oth, and Saturday 31st. Hours for all three days 11:00 to 4:30.

On Friday, prior to making the C&J feed store run on Saturday,( a thank-you to all who made that happen), we had to improvise a bit in feeding all the exotic birds who reside here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. A lot of french bread had been left at our door, so what’s more bird approved then french toast.

A couple dozen eggs, vanilla, milk and of course cinnamon completes the mix, and voila, happy avians here at M.A.R.S..

Nothing says happy like a picture unfortunately the camera was not in my hand as a full plate of french toast was. However I did manage to snap Dakota a Harlequin Macaw enjoying hers. The Amazons andCockatoos were equally appreciative of the delicious treat. I tried it too, not bad!!!!!!!!

Remember when you adopt a bird from M.A.R.S. you better be good at making French toast.

M.A.R.S., is making some slight adjustments to our hours of operation. Friday the 28th, Saturday the 29th, and Monday the 31st, we will be open by appointment only. Please call 321-431-1407 to arrange special times. We will return to our regular hours of operation on Wednesday the 2nd of November.

Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary welcomes visitors to our parrot rescue. We hope you can adjust your schedules and visit us again soon.  In the meantime we  hope you all enjoy this Halloween weekend of fun and festivities.

  Upon many occasions our exotic bird rescue brings in simply amazing birds that are relinquished to M.A.R.S. for future adoptions. Such is the case with our Umbrella Cockatoo pictured here. His name is Marchello.

  We had high hopes for him to become a favorite addition to a loving family. He has all the amazing qualities a really good Cockatoo should have.  He however has one giant flaw, he does not like children or any version of them including teenagers. So with that said we here at M.A.R.S. are looking for adults only to give this bird the home he so deserves.

  Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary as you all know by now is a no-fault rescue. This policy has allowed our Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S. to learn through Marchellas’ prior adoptions that this amazing avian will do well and be a loving addition to an adults only household.

We are very happy to report that Stewie and Angel Eyes who replaced Marchella  in those families with children, are doing very well indeed.

Here at our exotic bird rescue known simply as M.A.R.S., we make it our highest priority to make this decision to adopt a very successful and wonderful experience for all.  To those of you who understand that adoption is the only way to go, we thank you all !!!!!!!!!!!!

Every time we go through these end of summer storms we are amazed by the power of the wind and rains. We are equally grateful and amazed that we escaped the full force of a hurricane once again.  

Monday as you can imagine was nothing short of a miracle, as all who volunteer here at M.A.R.S. were willing to lend lots of hands to the job of cleaning up.

All the aviary birds on Saturday and Sunday, though frequently getting wet, were making happy sounds. Food and boxes changed out at regular intervals to give them the idea that all was right in their world here at the parrot rescue. If they see calm in their caretakers, they remain calm. Of course some extra special treats never hurt. Bribery is a good thing.

So with that said, we will all get back to the daily running of Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. The care of the exotic birds who reside here will always be our highest priority.

We once again invite you to visit our Florida parrot rescue on any of our open days.  Come and interact with the Cockatoos, Macaws, Amazons and other species of our feathered friends. If you are considering adoption, this is by far the best hands on experience anywhere.

Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary wants to thank all who participated in making this sale a success. Those of you who helped are the backbone of any rescue organization. For those of you who came out and spent some money, we hope you enjoyed the sale.

Funding for exotic bird rescue is virtually non existent, so these sales are needed to keep funds available for feeding, operation, and numerous other necessities and expenses associated with a rescue.

 I’m Dusty, an Umbrella Cockatoo. I reside here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary.I am available for adoption, please ask to meet me.

 I’m extending an invitation to all to come to our fund raising Yard Sale on the 24th of September.

 There will be lots of items for sale, treasures and goods galore. You might have to dig to find them but you will have fun while you do. As we get organized we will post pictures of items for sale on our Facebook page, Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S..

 The place M.A.R.S.  418 Ocean Ave. Melbourne Beach, right in the front of the building.

 All proceeds of this event go directly to the care of the avians who reside here at our sanctuary. It is our hope that you join us. We are accepting donated items to sell all week long, and if by chance no one is here to receive them we have a drop box near the side gate.
