M.A.R.S. is simply putting it out there to all who follow our organization, we are in need of donations.  Our flock of adoptable and permanent avian residents is continuing to grow. The feed and supplies needed, and the day to day operation of  our rescue is going up and up. As any rescue continues to grow at the rate M.A.R.S., a Florida based exotic bird sanctuary is, we are constantly in need of more food and cages. Please if you have a cage in decent shape contact us. Never let it be said that the saying “a birds eye view” couldn’t be taken literally. Especially when it comes to the parrots that reside here at the rescue. Take Saturday at M.A.R.S.. There was an obvious contest between Angel and Emily our resident female umbrella cockatoos and our very sweet male umbrella cockatoo Warf. Who could make it to the top of the tree first was anyone’s guess. Who would hold the top of the tree another story. Pictures tell all, Warf was hands down the winner. Emily, took to the lower branches. And Angel settled for the top of the umbrella for her new view of Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary visitors area. Saturday was once again a great day here at M.A.R.S.

for the visitors, the volunteers and the exotic birds who reside here at our Florida parrot rescue.

It truly is amazing to think that within a group of female U2s’ at M.A.R.S., Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary, there is jealously running rampant.

Take our very own Lilly for example. She will fly and dive bomb only the females if given the chance to do so. If we ever have a question about eye color, male or female, we let Lilly decide. Yesterday, Lotty, a female umbrella cockatoo, showed the same behavior when faced with visitors interested in adoption who came to our parrot rescue. She immediately pushed another female away to gain access to the humans. Emily, the other female cockatoo, simply looked on in dismay at the situation. Perhaps when Lotty has found a new home, Emily will have a chance to find a forever home too.

Crazy as it may sound, I really really put it out there that M.A.R.S, needed a new mascot since our resident iguana Gracie passed away. Lo and behold, today in a u-haul truck from South Carolina, Jack Sparrow came to our parrot rescue sanctuary. He was looking out the passenger window when he arrived, so that says something about his size. Yes he is a big boy!!!!!!!!!!!. He is sweet, loves to be pet and held, and immediately wanted food. Through out the years I have met many amazing cockatoos, however none can compare with a little Citron named Clyde. His life force has a never ending power supply. He has feathered friends that care for him and watch over him. He has the ability to come through circumstances that could easily drain the life force from a much healthier and larger bird. Yes, he truly is an amazing little guy our Clyde

Originally Clyde came to us in such a state, that I did not believe he would survive the week. He was in a severe state of depression, and very weekend physically. Well, he showed us all what a change of environment, lots of love and good food, sunshine and fresh air, and lots of baths can do to change a birds prospective on life.

Clyde has faced a new challenge. Recently he had to have his wing removed. Now understand he was never much of a flyer , nor did he demand to be one. He did however do the most amazing WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! with both wings up at the same time. His way of saying he was very happy with one thing or another.

He is fighting to deal with this loss. He has good days and bad ones. He will always try his best to act normally, but as you can imagine, he knows he is missing that wing. The other day I gave out large tortilla chips, Clyde took it and placed it where his wing used to be and looked at me with a look only Clyde could muster. A bit impish a bit sad, but if you can believe this with humor. He followed the action with a big WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!. Only our Clyde, He is truly one of a kind. Live long Clyde. We all would miss you way to much, and so would all your feathered friends, especially Mr. Stubbs and Big Bird.

A truck load of food

Every six weeks M.A.R.S. makes a run to C&J Feed for the assorted bags of food necessary to keep all our feathered friends happy and healthy. Products with the names Lafeber, Higgins, Roudybush, Kaytee, Hampton Farms peanuts and Mazuri are loaded into our truck (no delivery charge that way). The total of these products is a whopping $606.00, and yes, that is after our discount is applied.

The above does not include all the other necessary items such as fresh fruit and vegies, additional protein such as chicken legs or and occasional steak, (Clyde’s) favorite, I will explain that in a later story. Also not included are special treats such as banana, cornbread and fresh ground peanut butter all available from Publix Supermarket which is totally safe.

With all that said, a picture is worth a thousand words. Please donate to our cause and help feed our hungry critters by paying for the above necessary items. Pictured above is Sophie. Sophie cannot help from mutilating herself (see the close up shot of her chest area) and she is in need of medicine, vitamins, etc. Lots of love from MARS is certainly helping her to become a better adjusted bird but with your donations we can continue to provide her with a chance at a life filled with happiness and hopefully a full recovery.

Our goal will then be to find a wonderful new family to adopt Sophie and provide her with the home she needs. See Sophia and other Cockatoos on our Adoption Page.
