For Adults Only.

Upon many occasions our exotic bird rescue brings in simply amazing birds that are relinquished to M.A.R.S. for future adoptions. Such is the case with our Umbrella Cockatoo pictured here. His name is Marchello.

We had high hopes for him to become a favorite addition to a loving family. He has all the amazing qualities a really good Cockatoo should have.  He however has one giant flaw, he does not like children or any version of them including teenagers. So with that said we here at M.A.R.S. are looking for adults only to give this bird the home he so deserves.

Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary as you all know by now is a no-fault rescue. This policy has allowed our Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S. to learn through Marchellas’ prior adoptions that this amazing avian will do well and be a loving addition to an adults only household.

We are very happy to report that Stewie and Angel Eyes who replaced Marchella  in those families with children, are doing very well indeed.

Here at our exotic bird rescue known simply as M.A.R.S., we make it our highest priority to make this decision to adopt a very successful and wonderful experience for all.  To those of you who understand that adoption is the only way to go, we thank you all !!!!!!!!!!!!

Please continue to support our cause by adopting, donating or becoming a member. And please pass the mission of M.A.R.S. to all who seek an exotic bird as their pet of choice.

Once again we dodged the bullet, but cleanup goes on an on.

Tree debris everwwhereCages got washed downNeeded rearranged anyway

Every time we go through these end of summer storms we are amazed by the power of the wind and rains. We are equally grateful and amazed that we escaped the full force of a hurricane once again.

Monday as you can imagine was nothing short of a miracle, as all who volunteer here at M.A.R.S. were willing to lend lots of hands to the job of cleaning up.

All the aviary birds on Saturday and Sunday, though frequently getting wet, were making happy sounds. Food and boxes changed out at regular intervals to give them the idea that all was right in their world here at the parrot rescue. If they see calm in their caretakers, they remain calm. Of course some extra special treats never hurt. Bribery is a good thing.

So with that said, we will all get back to the daily running of Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. The care of the exotic birds who reside here will always be our highest priority.

We once again invite you to visit our Florida parrot rescue on any of our open days.  Come and interact with the Cockatoos, Macaws, Amazons and other species of our feathered friends. If you are considering adoption, this is by far the best hands on experience anywhere.

We sincerely hope you will all continue to support our cause with a donation, or consider becoming a M.A.R.S. member.  As always, we need all the help we can get.

YARD SALE yeilds much needed funds for M.A.R.S.

Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary wants to thank all who participated in making this sale a success. Those of you who helped are the backbone of any rescue organization. For those of you who came out and spent some money, we hope you enjoyed the sale.

Funding for exotic bird rescue is virtually non existent, so these sales are needed to keep funds available for feeding, operation, and numerous other necessities and expenses associated with a rescue.

Please continue to support our cause. Donate online, attend our future sales, become a member, or become a volunteer. Thank-you to all.

Oh, and as all our batteries need recharging just as the cameras does, pictures will be posted on our Facebook page, Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S. later today. Please make sure to take a look.

New arrival to M.A.R.S., and he is grand.

Our newest arrival, Winston, a Grand Eclectus, was relinquished to Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary on Saturday.

Winston was immediately given a beak trim, as the length was about to the bottom of where his head feathers are. A bath soon followed to access the feather issues.

Turns out he enjoyed the entire process, and immediately went to everyone as if to say thank-you.

Winston will be available for adoption here at M.A.R.S. as soon as he completes his rehabilitation period. Stay tuned for updates.

M.A.R.S. relies on your donations to continue the work we do here. Please consider a donation to our cause.

Charlie, Congo Grey, rules the day.

This is our newest addition to M.A.R.S.. Charlie is available for adoption at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. He is 20 years young, has a  great personality, and is ready to find his forever home. Charlie was relinquished due to owners personal reasons.

Please submit inquiries to www.marsparrots.org via our contact form. All inquiries will be answered on a timely basis.

Bella Sophia (our amazing Moluccan)

Such a girl

Sophie, a  Moluccan Cockatoo came into Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary on April 17 2009.

She is known as a self mutilator in reference to the wound you see on her chest.
Amazingly there are distinct reasons this can occur, one obviously would be physical and in most cases a cause would show itself after many tests. Sophie received all the medical tests up to and including an ultra sound.  With that said, the other reason is not so easy to cure and is Psychological in nature. This is Sophies’ story.
Sophie started out in a good home with loving people, but due to circumstances changing she was passed on to another place, and than another.
Somewhere Sophie became extremely sad. She started picking and than mutilating. Some say it is totally hormonal, I disagree.  She was allowed to be herself once again, outside a lot, good food, no collars, no bandages, a long process but the end result is almost no picking at all.
Now comes a few new wound care products from Harrisons, we are using them on Sophie as I write this. With continued use we hope to heal the hardened calloused area Sophie created.
Every other evening I try to sit with Sophie before bedtime to assure her someone loves her. With all here at the rescue this is not an easy thing to consistently do. That is why to a very special person, Sophie will make a very special addition to their life. We at M.A.R.S. are always available for support if needed.

M.A.R.S. presents, “The Odd Couples”.

Sometimes when you least expect it, the unexpected happens

Bridy and Oz

at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. Saturday was such a day.

Everything seemed a little bit to quiet, and you can see why, there was a lot of preening going on.
New arrival Baily, a Lesser Sulfer Crested Cockatoo, was soon to have a new friend Doc, an Umbrella Cockatoo, who not only allowed the preening but introduced Baily to his favorite mulberry tree. They had a fun day together here at M.A.R.S.
Big Bird and Stubbs, well there is no rhyme or reason for that pairing.  A Yellow Naped Amazon, and an Umbrella Cockatoo, who knew what great buddies they would become.

Doc and Baily

Then there was Oz, a Moluccan Cockatoo, and the Triton Cockatoo we named Bridy.
Last, but not least Bitsy and Ben, two Ducorps Cockatoos. They are just plain odd all the way around.

Hope you enjoy our Saturday pics from our Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S.. Please consider a donation to support the members of M.A.R.S.. Remember don’t Shop! Adopt!

Sunday morning Surprise

Coreen Fry and Yamile

Sunday is usually a quiet, calm, very low key kind of day here at our Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S..

This Sunday however, we were treated to a visit from our friend Coreen Fry and her photographer Yamile.

Coreen is assembling footage of exotic birds to be used in a CD she is producing that will be informative as well as entertaining. Look for the CD  to be available for sale here on our site www.marsparrots.org  in the near future.

In filming this morning we had fun with our frequent flyer’s Keiffer, an Umbrella cockatoo and of course our adorable Miss Lilly a Lesser Sulfer Crested cockatoo. They both preformed admirably for the video cam.  They appeared to completely enjoy the whole process which took a little over an hour.

Thank-you to the ladies for a rather noisey but very enjoyable experience here at M.A.R.S. on this picture perfect Sunday Morning. Did I mention the mimosas?

Now it’s back to quiet once again here at our exotic bird rescueand of course bananna pancakes as a reward to all the birds for their cooperation in the making of this video.

Remember, donations are necessary to continue our work here at the sanctuary. Please consider donating to Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. Thank-you

Saturday pics for Sunday viewing, enjoy

Llilly surveying the property

Every Saturday we have an open invitation to everyone to visit . To meet and greet the avians here for adoption, to cuddle to play to simply enjoy the atmosphere here at our Florida parrot rescue M.A.R.S..

Saturday was a great day for doing just that here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary.

The Cockatoos, Amazons and Macaws all had a very play filled day, until the weather got a little cold for some of the smaller residents. Especially Bitsy and her friend Ben two of the rescue birds from Miami.

Check out the full gallery of pictures at Florida Parrot Rescue MARS on Facebook.

Stubbs, do not even try to take this toy

Saturday is “Party Day” here at M.A.R.S.

Our oldest residents Clyde and Bigbird

Saturday turned out to be the kind of day that both people and parrots pray for. The perfect day to visit with all the M.A.R.S. avians. Watch them get baths, and simply play, play, play. All of us agreed that the cockatoos stole the show. Although an amazon or two tried really hard.

We all want in on the act

our newest Ricco

You could safely say it was a parrot party to be sure. Enjoyed by all who came through the doors of Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary.

Pictures as always tell the story so here are a few to get you started. See all the rest on Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S. on Facebook.

Please don’t forget  that Saturday is also our official adoption day
