French toast Friday.

On Friday, prior to making the C&J feed store run on Saturday,( a thank-you to all who made that happen), we had to improvise a bit in feeding all the exotic birds who reside here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. A lot of french bread had been left at our door, so what’s more bird approved then french toast.

A couple dozen eggs, vanilla, milk and of course cinnamon completes the mix, and voila, happy avians here at M.A.R.S..

Nothing says happy like a picture unfortunately the camera was not in my hand as a full plate of french toast was. However I did manage to snap Dakota a Harlequin Macaw enjoying hers. The Amazons andCockatoos were equally appreciative of the delicious treat. I tried it too, not bad!!!!!!!!

Remember when you adopt a bird from M.A.R.S. you better be good at making French toast.

Every time we go through these end of summer storms we are amazed by the power of the wind and rains. We are equally grateful and amazed that we escaped the full force of a hurricane once again.

Monday as you can imagine was nothing short of a miracle, as all who volunteer here at M.A.R.S. were willing to lend lots of hands to the job of cleaning up.

All the aviary birds on Saturday and Sunday, though frequently getting wet, were making happy sounds. Food and boxes changed out at regular intervals to give them the idea that all was right in their world here at the parrot rescue. If they see calm in their caretakers, they remain calm. Of course some extra special treats never hurt. Bribery is a good thing.

So with that said, we will all get back to the daily running of Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. The care of the exotic birds who reside here will always be our highest priority.

We once again invite you to visit our Florida parrot rescue on any of our open days. Come and interact with the Cockatoos, Macaws, Amazons and other species of our feathered friends. If you are considering adoption, this is by far the best hands on experience anywhere.

We sincerely hope you will all continue to support our cause with a donation, or consider becoming a M.A.R.S. member. As always, we need all the help we can get.

Black and White Night.

Pat, Linda, Lu and Vicky at Aloha. A Friay night adoption event that featured black and white kittens, black and white decor, and a few white birds from M.A.R.S., Cockatoos of course.

Adoption events are successful when public awareness is raised and some lucky kittens find new homes. Such was the case on this Friday evening event.

Thank-you to Aloha for inviting us. The setting was picture purrrrrrrrrrrrrfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mirror mirror on the wall……….

Bitsy tales a close look

Bitsy a Ducorps Cockatoo really got an eye full of herself in the mirror. She stared and stared and made those funny little sounds that only a Ducorps seems to make, as if asking, “Is that what I really look like?”

Well, Miss Bitsy, we here at M.A.R.S., our Florida parrot rescue, are about to try some brand new Harrisons Heal products to see if we can help improve your image.

We will be using two products, Soother a topical spray, along with Bird Builder a dietary supplement.

With the use of these products along with fresh air and sunshine, and some other additions to Bitsys’ daily routine we will hope to see marked improvement in what would other wise seem a lost cause.

Sometimes when you least expect it, the unexpected happens

at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. Saturday was such a day.

Everything seemed a little bit to quiet, and you can see why, there was a lot of preening going on.

New arrival Baily, a Lesser Sulfer Crested Cockatoo, was soon to have a new friend Doc, an Umbrella Cockatoo, who not only allowed the preening but introduced Baily to his favorite mulberry tree. They had a fun day together here at M.A.R.S.

Big Bird and Stubbs, well there is no rhyme or reason for that pairing. A Yellow Naped Amazon, and an Umbrella Cockatoo, who knew what great buddies they would become.

Then there was Oz, a Moluccan Cockatoo, and the Triton Cockatoo we named Bridy.

Last, but not least Bitsy and Ben, two Ducorps Cockatoos. They are just plain odd all the way around.

What a storm we had!!!!!!!

Thursday March 31st, WOW!!!!!!!!, what a storm. Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary spent 6 1/2 hours without electric. Winds so strong that trees came crashing down. One just missing the aviaries.

So as you can imagine, today has to start out on a good note. The work of clean up here at our rescue will be a long hard one. The Macaws, Cockatoos and Amazons in the aviary will have lots of entertainment from the humans today.

Chain saw definately need. Anyone have one to loan????????

Oh, did I mention a hearty breakfast for all the feathered members of M.A.R.S., and actually some left over for me.

Saturday turned out to be a picture perfect day for visiting M.A.R.S.

We were pleased to have ample help from our volunteers Jane, Linden and Frank. Their amazing team work helped facilitate a quick feed and clean up. This allowed all of us quality time to spend with our visitors, and provided some great one on one time with the cockatoos, macaws, amazons and other avian members who reside here in our Florida Parrot Rescue M.A.R.S.

Always take a closer look.

Sometimes we all have a tendency to look to quickly, and judge to harshly, without getting the full story.

Exactly what I did when first viewing this picture.

The subject matter jumped off the page, and I assumed the worst. Feathers of Cockatoos being used for fashion shoes, which of course was not the case at all. The designer used turkey and chicken feathers dyed in bright colors for high fashion shoe embellishment.

Although this was an eye catcher of an advertisement, I doubt if any of us will be slaves to this kind of fashion statement. Always remember to get the facts straight before jumping to the wrong conclusions.

Helping hands, helping M.A.R.S.

Some times hard work can be downright fun. Such was the case when members of a local Girl scout troup came to M.A.R.S..

We at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary are so greatfull to the girls who assisted with various jobs here at our exotic bird rescue.

Happily they plan to return soon to help with other projects, and of course to visit with the Cockatoos, macaws and other members that reside in our florida parrot rescue. The girls did take time out for Jack Sparrow our resident mascott. He actually seemed to enjoy getting in on the fun.
