The amazing U2 girls, jealously within the flock

August 29, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

It truly is amazing to think that within a group of female U2s’ at M.A.R.S., Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary, there is jealously running rampant.

Take our very own Lilly for example. She will fly and dive bomb only the females if given the chance to do so. If we ever have a question about eye color, male or female, we let Lilly decide. Yesterday, Lotty, a female umbrella cockatoo, showed the same behavior when faced with visitors interested in adoption who came to our parrot rescue. She immediately pushed another female away to gain access to the humans. Emily, the other female cockatoo, simply looked on in dismay at the situation. Perhaps when Lotty has found a new home, Emily will have a chance to find a forever home too.

Please consider a donation to our cause so we can continue finding homes for all the M.A.R.S. members.

Food Glorious Food, please help us to buy some

February 18, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

A truck load of food

Every six weeks M.A.R.S. makes a run to C&J Feed for the assorted bags of food necessary to keep all our feathered friends happy and healthy. Products with the names Lafeber, Higgins, Roudybush, Kaytee, Hampton Farms peanuts and Mazuri are loaded into our truck (no delivery charge that way). The total of these products is a whopping $606.00, and yes, that is after our discount is applied.

The above does not include all the other necessary items such as fresh fruit and vegies, additional protein such as chicken legs or and occasional steak, (Clyde’s) favorite, I will explain that in a later story. Also not included are special treats such as banana, cornbread and fresh ground peanut butter all available from Publix Supermarket which is totally safe.

With all that said, a picture is worth a thousand words. Please donate to our cause and help feed our hungry critters by paying for the above necessary items. If you can, also consider sponsoring a M.A.R.S. parrot or becoming a member of Melbourne Aviary Rescue Sanctuary by visiting our forms page.

It is our sincerest hope that you will help us maintain and achieve our goals entering into our third year of rescuing, rehabilitating and finding forever homes through adoption.

Out of the cold and out of the blue

January 12, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Lindsay, and a generous gift for M.A.R.S.

Lindsay, and a generous gift for M.A.R.S.

Today was grueling, yesterday was equally so and the day before and the day before that. You get the picture.  All of the members of M.A.R.S. ARE INSIDE AND OUT OF THE COLD. Right when you think that this cold cold weather can’t continue, it does for one more night. Than an amazing volunteer, Jane comes in, and you just get to it, and do it.  Cleaning and feeding and providing lots of boxes and things for all of the birds to keep busy and happy so there is quiet time.  Extra treats provided like dried fruit and cheese cubes, again you get the picture right?

Well after all the work is done, it suffices to say that Jane and I are simply relieved to be finished, another day ended, the members of M.A.R.S. happy and content. Not so  for their  human caretakers, we’re spent. We also know that tomorrow it all starts all over again.

Than out of the blue, two people are at the door, Lindsay and her Mom. In their hands a card and an envelope containing donations that a group of Christmas caroling children collected for the members of M.A.R.S.  This is what sets some days apart from all the others, and this is what makes it all so amazing. Thank-you to Lindsay, Linden (another great volunteer), Rue, Rowen, and Alyssa. We so appreciate your donation.

Sponsor a M.A.R.S. Parrot like Sophie or Angel

October 10, 2009 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Pictured above is Sophie. Sophie cannot help from mutilating herself (see the close up shot of her chest area) and she is in need of medicine, vitamins, etc. Lots of love from MARS is certainly helping her to become a better adjusted bird but with your donations we can continue to provide her with a chance at a life filled with happiness and hopefully a full recovery.

Our goal will then be to find a wonderful new family to adopt Sophie and provide her with the home she needs. See Sophia and other Cockatoos on our Adoption Page.

If adoption isn’t possible, then please consider sponsorship of a M.A.R.S. avian member. Your donations will help additional members of our feathered friends who are also in dire need of vitamin supplements, special diets and medical supplies (also pictured is Angel whose story will follow soon in Bird Talk).

Remember, Cockaoos are the cuddlers! Let’s give these beautiful white birds a reason to get cuddly again!

For Jane and Max

August 23, 2009 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Max our resident Pionus lost his top beak a few months back.

With loving care and balanced nutrients, Volunteer Extroidinaire Jane has given Max a chance for survival that otherwise would not have been possible. All her amazing efforts have given Max an extended life.

Now we need to give Jane back her life and provide a prosthetic beak for Max.
Any imput on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

The pictures attached are sad to view, but Max has a huge life force and desire to survive which, thanks to Jane, he has up to now. Please send any links if you know a source, and please donate to help provide the funds for Max to get a new beak.

All of us at M.A.R.S. WILL BE FOREVER GREATFULL. Max most of all.

Yard Sale Brings Donations!

February 19, 2009 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

yardsale

Once again raising awareness and funds for M.A.R.S. this weekend’s YARD SALE proved to be a triple hitter! Friday was the perfect Florida day, sunny and not too hot , so lots of people joined in the fun.  For the first time ever, we opened up the entire property so visitors could wander through the aviary and browse all the birds. Our resident Moluccan Cockatoo Thumper decided that he needed a little retail therapy and caused a bit of commotion when he got loose and ran across the table throwing cups and jewelry! All this ruckus for a little attention!  But we all know that birds will be birds!

Saturday continued the event, and was equally successful. Sunday’s sky look tempermental and we weren’t even going to continue with the sale but we did until the rains came. You can bet we had to scramble definitely got wet but still fun! Although it takes hours of set-up and clean-up, in the end it’s all worth it. We must thank all who donated items for the sale and those who gave of their time in making it all come together ( a special huge thanks to Linda Peppin, Mary Christina and Rene Ranieri!!!).

The residents of M.A.R.S. will continue to benefit from these endeavors. We’ll keep you posted on the next yard sale!
