Gracie, our mascot, semi frozen but fine
January 20, 2010 by LuAnn Apple · 2 Comments
Thinking about a Florida parrot rescue like M.A.R.S., iguanas might not be what comes to mind. Exotic bird rescue consists of many facets such as adoptions, rehabilitation, boarding, and daily bird care by great volunteers, and always, praying for donations. These are the things you would expect.
Well, with the recent cold, we experienced another dilemma added to our list of ever evolving tasks. How to extract our mascot Gracie from way under a wood deck and how to thaw her out once we achieved this.
With this said, take a look at the photos, and know that it took three days for her to be back to her old self. How we did everything is another story, for another time.
Sponsor a M.A.R.S. Parrot like Sophie or Angel

Pictured above is Sophie. Sophie cannot help from mutilating herself (see the close up shot of her chest area) and she is in need of medicine, vitamins, etc. Lots of love from MARS is certainly helping her to become a better adjusted bird but with your donations we can continue to provide her with a chance at a life filled with happiness and hopefully a full recovery.
Our goal will then be to find a wonderful new family to adopt Sophie and provide her with the home she needs. See Sophia and other Cockatoos on our Adoption Page.
If adoption isn’t possible, then please consider sponsorship of a M.A.R.S. avian member. Your donations will help additional members of our feathered friends who are also in dire need of vitamin supplements, special diets and medical supplies (also pictured is Angel whose story will follow soon in Bird Talk).
Remember, Cockaoos are the cuddlers! Let’s give these beautiful white birds a reason to get cuddly again!
M.A.R.S. updates, just a little news for those who want to know

First, remember Founders Day May 2nd, we will not be in the park, we will be in front of Apple Spas on Ocean Avenue. This will be a membership drive. Please join the fun!
Second, the name chosen for our new quaker is Chomp. He so lives up to the name. His friend will be called Bite. Let us know if you can guess why!
Third, many events have taken place recently, yard sale fun and fund raising, another interview by Florida Today at the Melbourne Art Festival. We also have new members who joined our M.A.R.S. avian crew. And best of all there will be field trips from local schools to visit the parrots of the Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary.
