From tree to tree, Mango and Hot Rod fly free

Mango

Hot Rod

When asked how I spend the days at Florida Parrot Rescue, M.A.R.S., I  reply, “One never knows what will unfold at the parrot sanctuary on any given day”.

Take for instance last Thursday, when two fully flighted harlequin Macaws got to try out their wings. Mango and Hot Rod, available for adoption here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary are siblings who never leave each others side. So no surprise, when one took flight the other followed.

We here at M.A.R.S. have a three day rule. In three days they are hungry and thirsty, so you had better track them and pray that’s the day of recovery.

From tree to tree on day three we were successful. They were none the worse for the wear, and I believe fully enjoyed their time in the air. They were a beautiful sight for all to see, but not necessarily for me, the tracker.

Out of the cold and out of the blue

Lindsay, and a generous gift for M.A.R.S.

Lindsay, and a generous gift for M.A.R.S.

Today was grueling, yesterday was equally so and the day before and the day before that. You get the picture.  All of the members of M.A.R.S. ARE INSIDE AND OUT OF THE COLD. Right when you think that this cold cold weather can’t continue, it does for one more night. Than an amazing volunteer, Jane comes in, and you just get to it, and do it.  Cleaning and feeding and providing lots of boxes and things for all of the birds to keep busy and happy so there is quiet time.  Extra treats provided like dried fruit and cheese cubes, again you get the picture right?

Well after all the work is done, it suffices to say that Jane and I are simply relieved to be finished, another day ended, the members of M.A.R.S. happy and content. Not so  for their  human caretakers, we’re spent. We also know that tomorrow it all starts all over again.

Than out of the blue, two people are at the door, Lindsay and her Mom. In their hands a card and an envelope containing donations that a group of Christmas caroling children collected for the members of M.A.R.S.  This is what sets some days apart from all the others, and this is what makes it all so amazing. Thank-you to Lindsay, Linden (another great volunteer), Rue, Rowen, and Alyssa. We so appreciate your donation.

“The 9/11 Greys”

Eight years ago, terrorists attacked our nation. This event effected us immeasureably and changed us forever. Our securities were breached, our defenses were compromised. We were vulnerable.

Historic records tell of the events that unfolded that fatefull day of September 11, 2001. What history won’t record is the legacy of the animals that survived. I will now tell the story of “The 9/11 Greys”.

Pictured above are our three feathered members of history, three SURVIVORS of the World Trade Center attacks.
The apartment building was located not far from the collapsed towers where they survived for days without food, fresh water, and their human caretakers. Their enviornment had windows blown in and the rooms were filled with smoke and toxic dust.
How were the birds found?  The city was using rescue dogs for live animals, different from the  cadavor dogs which I guess is self-explanatory. The bird’s owners all died in the attack.  The lady that rescued the birds was named MICHELLE RODGERS, it was her dog who actually found the birds. She said she found M.A.R.S. on the net and after meeting with me said that she could tell that I  feel the same about birds as she does.
M.A.R.S. is proud to have been chosen by their rescuer to provide safe haven and re-homing to the 9/11 Greys.
What could be a more patriotic gesture than to donate or adopt one of these little troopers!
To all who perished, and all who survived, we will forever remember 9/11.
And M.A.R.S  proudly salutes Pretty Boy, Katie Girl and Danny Boy and we hope you do too!

For Jane and Max

August 23, 2009 by LuAnn Apple · View Comments

Max our resident Pionus lost his top beak a few months back.

With loving care and balanced nutrients, Volunteer Extroidinaire Jane has given Max a chance for survival that otherwise would not have been possible. All her amazing efforts have given Max an extended life.

Now we need to give Jane back her life and provide a prosthetic beak for Max.
Any imput on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

The pictures attached are sad to view, but Max has a huge life force and desire to survive which, thanks to Jane, he has up to now. Please send any links if you know a source, and please donate to help provide the funds for Max to get a new beak.

All of us at M.A.R.S. WILL BE FOREVER GREATFULL. Max most of all.

It Must Be Springtime

Occasionally, some outsiders also find M.A.R.S. a safe haven. Look closely and you will see what I mean. The baby ringneck doves, and the baby screech owl, happy and healthy. Their parents chose great nest spots for them. And let’s not forget our resident iguana Gracie.
