Out of the cold and out of the blue

Lindsay, and a generous gift for M.A.R.S.

Today was grueling, yesterday was equally so and the day before and the day before that. You get the picture.  All of the members of M.A.R.S. ARE INSIDE AND OUT OF THE COLD. Right when you think that this cold cold weather can’t continue, it does for one more night. Than an amazing volunteer, Jane comes in, and you just get to it, and do it.  Cleaning and feeding and providing lots of boxes and things for all of the birds to keep busy and happy so there is quiet time.  Extra treats provided like dried fruit and cheese cubes, again you get the picture right?

Well after all the work is done, it suffices to say that Jane and I are simply relieved to be finished, another day ended, the members of M.A.R.S. happy and content. Not so  for their  human caretakers, we’re spent. We also know that tomorrow it all starts all over again.

Than out of the blue, two people are at the door, Lindsay and her Mom. In their hands a card and an envelope containing donations that a group of Christmas caroling children collected for the members of M.A.R.S.  This is what sets some days apart from all the others, and this is what makes it all so amazing. Thank-you to Lindsay, Linden (another great volunteer), Rue, Rowen, and Alyssa. We so appreciate your donation.

When the temperatures drop….

weather-marsI can’t tell you how happy I am that the warm weather has returned! Last week when the evening temps dropped into the low 30′s we really had our work cut out for us. Birds can stand temps around 40 degrees for one night but more than that and you better bring them in – especially any featherless birds! With this ongoing cold snap, suddenly all 29 of our outdoor birds have to become indoor birds and quick!

This is when I am soooo thankful for the M.A.R.S. volunteers. Couldn’t do it without them!

The laughter and good music that accompanies this crazy task really helps to keep the birds happy. Don’t forget the birds do best if grouped together with who they get along with. It’s like the seating arrangement at a wedding or a politician’s dinner!!!

This happens every night until the temperature reaches at least 40 degrees again. Then, and only then is it safe for the birds to be back outside. Keep your birds safe and warm! Don’t let them get too cold and pay attention to your weather report!
